As part of the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry’s (2017) legacy recommendation 8, in September 2021 the creation of a fund to support adult islanders with experience of care was agreed by the Council of Ministers.
This report is at the request of the Government to inform the way the fund will operate.
Around one third of our advocacy is with people with experience of care aged over 25. They have very few avenues to explore for, even modest, financial support. It is critical to remember that these are the people described by the Care Inquiry as ‘singularly neglected and failed’, now living adult life often under the shadow of that legacy. Many of our advocacy requests are for support with emergencies, therapy or accessing education.
We would like to make a strong request for the Government to implement this fund with the pace and urgency people deserve.
